I will not tell you if your Chromebook is compatible. Figure out what processor you’ve got and go to this link to see if your Chromebook is compatible: https://coolstar.org/

To continue the software series of videos, I want to take a look at how to install POP!_OS on Chromebook.

POP!_OS is a SUPER clean Linux distribution that is a bit system-intense, but it’s super friendly and easy to use. System76 explains the operating system better than I can, so here’s what they have to say about POP!_OS:

“We believe the computer and operating system are the most powerful and versatile tools ever created. We’re building an OS for the software developer, maker, and computer science professional who uses their computer as a tool to discover and create.”

In order to Install POP!_OS on a Chromebook, you will need:

  • 8GB USB Drive
  • Compatible Chromebook
  • Internet Connection
  • Watch this video: https://youtu.be/MK8-cBJw6wg

Download POP!_OS from here: https://system76.com/pop

Download Rufus from here: https://rufus.ie

Flash the POP!_OS ISO to your USB drive using Rufus. You may be prompted to download a couple of files to make Rufus and POP!_OS compatible. Do that and then flash with the recommended settings.

Plug the flashed USB into your modified Chromebook and power the Chromebook on. Start tapping ESC on the keyboard to get into the BIOS. Select the USB as the device to boot from.

You’ll be asked a series of questions regarding the language you want to use for the system, the keyboard, etc. It will ask for your timezone as well. Enter this data accordingly.

When you get to the page titled “Install” select “Clean Install”.

On the next page, you’ll select the SSD in your Chromebook as the device where POP!_OS should be installed. Then click “Erase and Install”.

On the “Drive Encryption” page, make the selection you want for the drive (encrypted or not) and then move on to the next step.

The next part may take upwards of 20 minutes or more.

Once the install is complete, you’ll be prompted to “Shut Down” or “Restart”. Select “Restart” and, when the screen is off, remove the USB drive.

When the restart is complete, you’ll setup a user account and connect to the internet.

That’s it. Installing POP!_OS on a Chromebook is pretty easy!

If you get stuck at the last step and your Chromebook won’t boot from the USB, watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiiDlynlOOY
