How To Turn An Old Laptop Into A Chromebook

I’ve received a several requests on how to turn an old laptop into a Chromebook, so I thought I’d take a few minutes showing how to do do that.

Turning An Old Laptop Into A Chromebook is actually pretty easy when it’s all said and done. You just need a laptop, an 8GB USB drive, and an internet connection.

First, you’ll need to download the NeverWare USB creation software if you’re using a PC. You can download the link from here:

Once you’ve got that, plug in your USB stick and run the program and just follow the steps.

This could take upwards of 20 minutes and they tell you that right on the program page when you’re making your bootable USB.

Next, you’ll need to get your laptop ready. If your laptop has 2 hard drives in it, remove the second drive as the USB installer will most likely try to install it there, but not make your system a dual boot system. You can put the second hard drive back when you’re done with the install process.

Make sure your laptop is plugged in. Then insert the USB drive and turn the laptop on. Some laptops will automatically boot from a USB, but if yours doesn’t, you’ll have to get into your boot settings immediately to change them or you’ll boot into whatever operating system is installed already.

Use Google to find out how to change your laptop’s boot settings.

Once you’ve booted from the USB, the install process should start. After a minute, you’ll be asked to login for some reason. Do that and then proceed through the install process. It’s just a few clicks.

Once the install is complete, your laptop will just shut itself off.

Once it shuts off, remove the USB drive and power your laptop on. Then just sign in to your Google account and you’re all set to go.
